To agree that members of the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) may nominate substitutes to represent them if they are unable to attend the meeting themselves.
That the Constitution of the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education be amended to provide for substitutes for any member of the four groups making up its membership, where the appointed member is unable to attend a meeting.
SACRE has been appointed under Section 255 of the Education Act 1993 and Section 11 of the Education Reform Act 1988 by the Local Education Authority. There is currently no provision for members duly appointed to nominate a substitute if they are unable to attend a meeting. The recommendation is intended to help members of the SACRE by allowing them to send a substitute if they themselves are unable to attend a particular meeting.
The alternative would be to leave the Constitution unchanged but that would be likely to see further inquorate meetings where members are unable to attend themselves.
